Tobacco Road
Published On: Oct 25, 2006

Tobacco Road is the oldest restaurant and bar in the Miami Florida area. It first opened in 1912 back in the heyday of Miami. Over the last ninety years Tobacco Road has had many faces. It has been a Gay Bar and a Speakeasy (illegal drinking club). It was at one time a Strip Club and has become the best place in South Florida to hear Blues and traditional R & B.

Tobacco Road has survived killer Hurricanes, Prohibition, The Great Depression and the worst of the City of Miami. Musically it has also survived Disco and Hip-Hop. As a bar it survived the pressures of South Beach and the Grove.

Part of the appeal, besides the great music, is that Tobacco Road has is its own home town quality. It is a great place to go and a great place to be known in. The ambiance and setting of the bar call out for you to stay. It feels like there is ninety years of family calling you from the wall.

Tobacco Road has had some of the greatest names in Blues history play on its stage. From Buddy Guy to John Lee Hooker and Junior Wells the Road has served up the best music available. In the twenties Miami's Clubs and Bars were popular tourist destinations, Tobacco Road was right in the middle of the musical growth spurt that Miami experienced.

Today you can still count on some of the best Blues around, with nightly live music shows that start at 10pm. The Road is also in the middle of celebrating its ninetieth year with huge parties and of course the music that we love.

Tobacco Road also has a great kitchen that is open nightly until 2am. They serve a good variety of foods that is sure to please. Open for lunch and dinner you will never go hungry. From the soups and salads to their famous chili and sandwiches, Tobacco Road puts the same emphasis on its food as it does on it music. And let me not forget my favorite their huge hamburgers topped with almost any thing that you can think of. (Try the jalapeņo burger)

The dinner menu also rounds out with mouthwatering steaks that are sure to make you feel fat and happy. None of the prices are out of hand and the lunch menu could be considered to be cheap, especially considering Tobacco Roads location.

Tobacco Road is located just on the South side of the Miami River on South Miami Ave. It is easily accessible form downtown, it is not quite in walking distance of downtown but it is very close.

Downtown Miami has a huge Market Place right on Biscayne Bay, if you are down there then it is a short drive or taxi ride over to the Road and you can end your evening on a Blues note.

If you are in Miami for business then you can end your day at the Road for some good music and dinner, and then stay for drinks and the live Blues show. Take the chance that someone really famous, visiting Miami will stop in for a session or two. It has never happened to me but I have friends that have seen Buddy Guy play just because they were there.

Make you trip to Miami as enjoyable as you can, you can look to see who is playing at the Road on their website or you can call ahead. Have fun while you visit Miami and enjoy all that it has to offer.
